Tigers Battle through the softball season

The Independence softball program has continued to impress this season with a record of 7-7. The girls have faced a total of eleven high schools including schools such as John Handley, Tuscarora, Parkview and Riverside.

In their fourth game of the season on Wednesday, March 30, the Independence varsity softball team won 13-0 over Lightridge, which included a home run from sophomore Lauren Santoni. This was her second home run of the season. Their victory was double sided with JV winning by 17 runs. The final score of the JV game was 20-3.

Junior captain Mairin Cooke recalls the team’s mindset before entering the game, stating, “We felt good going into the game, but always take our competition seriously no matter who we are playing. As a team, we just know that to win we have to prepare mentally before every game and go in with as much energy as possible.” And that is what they did. The girls battled and with transparent support by cheering throughout the entirety of the game.

That day, Cooke also participated in one of Indy softball’s traditions, game day takeovers, in which a member of the softball team shares the hours and preparation leading up to their game on Instagram. On the Indy softball instagram (@indy_softball), Cooke shared a Q & A feature designed for followers to ask questions directed to the creator of the content. As well as her schedule throughout the day and teammate sightings. The takeover closed up with a picture of the team titled “good night Indy tigers”.

It was a good night for the girls, according to junior captain Megan Davies, “Our team chemistry grew by a lot tonight, and we will continue to work hard to get that extra leg up against teams.” The girls will continue into the post-season to face Briar Woods on Tuesday, May 17th.
