Artist in the making
Instead of lights, camera, action: it’s brush, blend and pose.
Maria Galan Castro is a junior at Independence High School, and not only is she an artist as in drawing, but her talent led her to become a makeup artist as well. Galan Castro has been doing makeup since eighth grade and has developed her love for it over the years. “What inspired me to do makeup was the way you can change your look by just painting your face. It also is my favorite way to express myself. Makeup is my art,” Galan Castro said.
According to her friend, sophomore Chloe Clark, “[Galan Castro] spends a lot of time working to get better and has a will to get better at makeup.”
Galan Castro shared her typical makeup routine for herself and others as well. “It takes me around 15 to 30 minutes and I do makeup on others too. I do people’s makeup for weddings and parties.”
Galan Castro follows the recent trend of creating natural looks. “I prefer natural makeup for myself. I just love it.”
Additionally, she enjoys experimenting with unique styles. “My favorite look of hers is the clown makeup she did this month,” said Clark.
Galan Castro planned to use her makeup skills on Halloween. “I love doing Halloween makeup looks because I can make myself look like something I’m not.”
Despite her passion for the art, Galan Castro has other plans in mind. “Honestly, I want to work for cyber security, but makeup is my backup plan.”
Galan Castro’s Instagram account shows the progress she’s made in her makeup journey over the past four years.
“I love her Shrek makeup look; seeing her paint her face with weird colors is fun to watch.” said Galan Castro’s friend, Briar Woods junior Lauren Ladd.
Galan Castro has some wise words for anyone else who wants to become an artist. “Practice! If you don’t practice, there is no way you would get better.”
