Life doesn’t seem all that bad when everyday is a holiday. Holiday Insights has a list of holidays for every day, and most of them are shown on this calendar. Below are descriptions about some of the most interesting holidays.

National Freedom Day: This special day celebrates freedom from American slavery, and it shows that America is a symbol of freedom. Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, created this day to celebrate freedom for all Americans. Feb. 1 was chosen as the date because it’s the day that President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery on a federal level. It was made an official holiday by President Harry Truman in 1948. 

The Day Music Died Day: This day mourns the deaths of three rock singers, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, who, at the height of their popularity, died in a plane crash on Feb. 3,  1959. The name of the day is in reference to the lyrics of the song “American Pie” by Don McLean which has themes related to the crash. People use this day to commemorate the untimely death of these popular 1950s rock singers.

International World Thinking Day: This day was created at the Fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference in 1926. While it was originally a day for girls to appreciate each other, it evolved into an opportunity for girls around the world to educate themselves on health issues that affect young women everywhere.

Looking back, here are the holidays we missed in January. 

Old Rock Day: While this sounds like a day to play old rock songs, it’s certainly not. Instead, it’s actually a day to appreciate old rocks like fossils or jewelry. The name is quite misleading, but interesting nonetheless.

Play God Day: Under the assumption that God is good, this day most likely has to do with doing good deeds that make a difference. While the origin of this day is unknown, it’s never a bad idea to do something kind for someone.

Ditch New Years Resolutions Day: Since everyone ends up ditching their resolutions, why not celebrate it? This is a day dedicated to ditching those resolutions with no guilt.
