‘West Side Story’ star Rachel Zegler not invited to 2022 Oscars

“West Side Story” actress Rachel Zegler was not invited to the 94th Academy Awards, despite the film’s seven nominations, including ‘Best Picture.’ Zegler revealed this information on Sunday on her Instagram, sparking outrage from fans.

On her most recent Instagram post, a follower commented: “Can’t wait to see what you’ll be wearing on Oscar night.”

Zegler responded: “i’m [sic] not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”

“Idk y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” she went on to say. “I will root for West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did three years ago. I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess.”

Zegler in a recent Instagram comment.

The 20-year old actress starred as Maria Vasquez in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the musical. The film has already won many awards this season, including three Golden Globes, one of which was won by Zegler, for ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.’

For the Oscars, nominees and presenters receive tickets, with additional tickets provided to studios to distribute. “West Side Story” is from 20th Century Studios, which is a division of The Walt Disney Company. It is assumed that Disney did not provide Zegler with a ticket, although that could be subject to change given the backlash that’s arised.

“West Side Story” is available for streaming on Disney+, and the 94th Academy Awards will be this Sunday, March 27, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

UPDATE: Zegler has now been invited to present at Sunday night’s Oscars.
