From Feb. 23 to 25, the art and theater programs of Indy joined together to go on a trip to New York City. The trip had a lot of joint activities between the two departments, but some were split up.

It started with an excruciating seven-hour-long bus ride. Long travel times can be a hurdle, as it was in this case, but the rest of the trip definitely made up for it. The bus ride took most of the first day, even when they left early in the morning, so the first day couldn’t be used to its full potential.

After crashing at the hotel, both departments took a walk around Times Square, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. It’s also the hub of the Broadway Theatre District, which they’ll visit later in the day. Both departments got to see a Broadway show called “Hadestown;” a musical about a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

The last day is when the departments split up. Sophomore Sabina Borjes, a member of the art department, described her point of view on this day. “On our last day, the art department basically had free exploration around SoHo for most of the day. I think overall, I would rate the trip an eight or nine out of ten. It was really fun, but we always got back to the hotel really late. We also always had to wake up early, so there was almost no time to sleep. Other than that it was great.”

Sophomores Siri Bommini and Allison Levy, members of the theater department, described their point of view on this day.“Both departments got to see a lot of Broadway shows, like ‘Hadestown’ and ‘Wicked,’ but on the last day we got to see ‘Kimberly Akimbo.’ I really liked the trip because it was really bonding,” said Bommini.

Levy added, “In the theater, we got to meet one of the actors in Kimberly Akimbo, and we were also taught one of the dances from the musical. The trip was a lot of fun.”

Overall, it was a very fun experience for both departments. It was really nice that they got to do something like this, and we look forward to seeing what other events will take place in the future.
