Girls JV Basketball pulls out win against rival
The Independence Girls JV basketball team started their 2021-2022 winter season off strong with a 10 game winning streak. In the girls first regular season game, they beat Tuscarora with a score of 24-23.
Junior Carly Van Benten attributes their success to the green days in the months leading up to their winter season. She stated that her favorite memory from this season was “bus rides and hanging out after [their] games.”
Freshman Madison Aikins described her stance on their success so far by saying, “We prepared for the season by working hard at practice and doing team building to become more connected on the court.” Another way the girls stay unified is through a team tradition they’ve created through wearing their Indy basketball sweatshirts to school on game days.
With COVID-19 protocols put in place, the girls have had a fairly normal season while also maintaining their safety and health. Although Van Benten explained, “We did have to take a break because someone on the team got COVID.”
Despite their promising start to the season, the girls met their match when they lost to Stone Bridge on Jan. 18. Akins responded saying that “they are a good team, but I think we were quite frazzled during that game.” Freshman Ava Jayaraman added, “They were aggressive too.”
The girls faced their rival again on Feb. 4, except this time, they were at Independence with home court advantage. They won 35-33.
