5 Must Watch Comfort Movies
When picking between the following list of classic movies, Independence students picked these five as their favorite comfort movies: “Tangled,” “The Notebook,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “The Parent Trap,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days,” “Mean Girls,” “Pitch Perfect,” “Mamma Mia,” “The Princess Diaries,” and “The Princess Bride.”
Tangled
When choosing from the endless list of Disney Princess Movies, “Tangled” is one that has become my go to comfort film. “Tangled” is the retelling of the story Rapunzel, which is centered around a princess taken from her home as a baby because her lengthy, blonde hair has powers, such as the power to heal and restore youth. Her whole life, she has been locked in a tower with a woman who claims to be her mother, but instead is using Repunzl’s hair to stay young. This seemingly dark story is overshadowed by Rapunzel’s courage and kindness and her relationship with thief, Flynn Ryder. This princess movie is far from normal, and that’s why I can’t seem to get enough of it. Repunzel has been told her whole life that the world is a scary place, but when given the chance to explore it she doesn’t cower from the dangers, but instead she stands up and faces them with a braveness not often seen by Disney princesses.
Mamma Mia
“Mamma Mia” is almost too good to write about. The catchy songs, stunning setting and enticing characters have made this movie one of my personal favorites. Donna, a hotelier in Greece, is planning her daughter Sophie’s wedding with her two best friends Rosie and Tanya. In the meantime, Sophie is trying to figure out who her father is, and in order to do so, invites three men to her wedding, all of whom could be her father. This movie encapsulates the ambiance of summer and will immediately put you in a better mood.
The Parent Trap
Lindsey Lohan movies rarely disappoint, and this movie is a testament to that. I have been watching this movie for years, and though most would be sick of it after watching it as many times as I have, I enjoy it more each time. Lindsey Lohan plays not one but two roles in the movie, as she plays twins Annie and Haley. Annie grew up without a dad and Haley grew up without a mom. Living in two different countries, their paths had never crossed until fate brought them to the same summer camp. The twins make a plan to switch places and bring their parents back together. Whenever I am looking for a comfort movie to put on and curl up to, “The Parent Trap” comes to mind.
Pitch Perfect
I had never heard of acapella until I watched this movie. Who knew that a movie about singing groups could become one of my favorite and most watched movies of all time? This film follows college student Beca, who is played by Anna Kendrick, and her journey of joining an all girl acapella group, called the Barden Bellas. Iconic character Fat Amy makes the movie the comedic masterpiece that it is, and the Riff Offs, when the different acapella groups sing songs based on categories chosen, are what make the movie one to watch over and over. The Riff Off is so melodic that I can sing it word for word.
Mean Girls
Cady Heron, played by Lindsey Lohan, had never been to school before as she was homeschooled most of her life, but she is quickly thrown into high school when the popular group takes her under their wing. Little do they know that Cady is planning with outcast Janice to take down the popular group, specifically queen bee Regina George. There are no words to describe why this is a comfort movie, so I’ll just say “on Wednesdays we wear pink.”
