The Independence Color Guard is back at it — after missing the fall 2020 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the guard has been practicing the past few weeks as part of a spring season.

Having started practice in the second week of March, guard has been busy learning technique and improving previously taught skills. There are 10 members this season, many of whom are returning from last year.

“It hasn’t been too hard going back,” sophomore guard member Kelly Barclay said. “[But] some of the technique we worked on has faded, so we have to improve that again.”

Given COVID restrictions and health precautions, there have been a few changes to how this season looks compared to previous ones. A significant change is in the choreography style, opting for less choreography with partners and fewer movements around the field. 

Not only does this season help prepare for the potential marching season next year, it functions as a sort of homecoming for the founding members. “I think the main point of this season is to give the band and guard members something to look forward to,” Barclay said, “since last marching season got cancelled.”

The season will conclude with a one-time performance alongside the marching band at the beginning of May, for the band and color guard parents.
