Recently, Indy serves, at Independence High School, went to a trick-or-treat event to volunteer and hand out candy to kids. This event occurred at the Brambleton Town Center on October 27th 2024.
“What makes it unique is, I think, just getting the kids together interacting with the community,” said Dr. Vonende Coleman, the sponsor for Indy Serves, “We don’t have a lot of activities here at the school that involves the community, so to be able to push our school out into the community and having our students engage with future tigers, I think it’s a positive experience on both sides.”
This event is meant to allow kids to have a fun time, get into the Halloween spirit, and have a unique experience. Kids and adults can enjoy an extra day of dressing up. It allows people to get into a more exciting and Halloween mood. Different people are able to connect with each other and have fun. “Everyone has fun and it’s a chance for everyone to like kind of connect,” said Mina Ashley, a junior at Independence High School. ”Seeing people dress up gets everyone in like the Halloween mood.”
Another student also thinks it’s a very fun event. “I think it will be really fun,” said Rhea Singh, a junior at Independence.
This event is unique because it gets a lot of the community involved, multiple people and other clubs volunteer as well, and people of all ages can get joy from this event. Indy students, D.E.C.A, and NHS are just a few examples of people who help volunteer. The people volunteering also have a lot of fun because they get to hang with friends and listen to music. It brings more people together to connect. “It brings people together and we do Halloween activities,” said Singh. “I get to be with my friends and do different activities.”
Other people also think it’s a good way to get people together. “I think it’s a really like good idea and like a fun way to get people together,” said Norlha Brooks, a sophomore at Independence.
This event happens every year. Many people say good things about this event and that we should continue it next year. It is very popular and should be done every year to give people another chance to have fun. “We should continue this because it’s a very like unique experience,” said Caitlynn Jeon, a junior at Independence. Some kids even said that it’s an alive event. “I definitely think we should continue this because it’s a very alive and fun event,” Brooks said.
It allows high schoolers to get more involved in their community. It gives them a chance to help volunteer and make children’s day. It gives them a chance to learn more about volunteering and it may influence them to help out more in the future.
This is another opportunity for teenagers to volunteer. “As Indy Serves we are part of it because it allows our students to get involved in a community,” said Dr. Coleman. “And to have Independence High School at Brambleton Town Center…it is a great opportunity to kinda have us out there”.
In conclusion, this event is a really great event to have people come together and have a fun, and enjoyable time. It gives high schoolers an opportunity to volunteer and help out with their community. It’s a unique event that allows people of different ages to come together and interact with one another. It’s also fun for kids to get more candy, dress up, and get into the Halloween spirit.
